President Boakai Advocates for Enhanced Cybersecurity at Awareness Conference

Speaking at the opening of the three-day cybersecurity awareness conference, President Joseph Nyumah Boakai called on the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) to create a comprehensive strategy to tackle cybersecurity issues. He emphasized the need for prioritizing cybersecurity in all government ministries and agencies and urged the Liberian National Legislature to quickly pass the draft Cybercrime Bill, which would enable legal measures against cybercriminal activities and help restore trust in Liberia’s critical ICT infrastructure and internet services.

For his part, the Acting Chairman of the LTA Board of Commissioners Abdullah Kamara, re-echoed the importance of establishing a robust legal framework and the government’s role in safeguarding citizens, particularly as they navigate potential risks associated with technology. He highlighted serious threats like identity theft and misinformation, stressing the need for awareness and responsible digital engagement. Madam Angela Cassell Bush, Acting Commissioner for the International Gateway Services (IGS), also spoke at the conference, noting that raising public awareness is crucial in fighting cybersecurity threats in Liberia. She pointed out that cybersecurity challenges are a significant concern not just locally, but globally as well. The conference which brought together local and international experts, stakeholders, policy makers, and panelists was organized by the LTA to commemorate Cyber Security Month, aligning with the global theme “Secure Our World.”
